Sanbing(三病)
Three common faults usually found in brushwork, namely:
板 Ban,
stiff; flat; unnatural.
刻 Ke, delineate improperly; with an outline too sharp.
结 Jie, not fluent; stagnant.
Sanyuan(三远)
The three types of mountain perspective, see gaoyuan(高远),shenyuan(深远),pingyuan(平远).
Shanshui(hua)(山水(画))
Painting of mountains and waters; landscape; mountains-and-waters
painting, the fiirst of the four major classes of subject
matter in Chinese painting.
Shanmian(扇面)
Fan face; the paper portion bearing the painting or calligraphy.
Shenyuan(深远)
Deep distance (one of the three types of mountain perspective),
the view from mountains or peaks in front, through to mountains
behind; the idea of reiteration or the piling of peak upon
peak; the colors are dull and obscure; figures are fine
and small.
Shen(qi)(神(气))
Spirit.
Shenpin(神品)
Superb work (of art); masterpiece.
Shensi(神似)
Be alike in spirit.
Shenyun(神韵)
Romantic charm(in art).
Shifa zaohua(师法造化)
Study and imitate nature; paint from nature.
Shibamiao(十八描)
Eighteen outlines, the eighteen standard styles of brush
strokes used in drawing garments(see"高古游丝描"、"琴弦描"、"铁线描"、"行云流水描"、"马蝗描"、"钉头鼠尾描"、"混描"、"撅头钉描"、"曹衣描"、"折芦描"、"橄榄描"、"枣核描"、"柳叶描"、"竹叶描"、"战笔水纹描"、"减笔描"、"柴笔描"、"蚯蚓描").
Shinu(仕女)
Painting of beautiful women, categorized in the renwu(人物)class.
Shoujuan(手卷)
Handscroll. The typical handscroll is never seen in its
entirety - its theme unfolds as though it were a poem or
a musical score.
Shufa(书法)
Calligraphy.
Shuxuan(熟宣)
The xuanzhi(宣纸)that is sized with alum water, or egg white,
or soya-bean milk, hence nonabsorbent and suits for meticulous
brushwork.
Shuiyin(水印(木版画))
(woodcut) watercolor block printing.
