Review
of Li Mingju's Work
In recent years, the art of Chinese
painting has evolved amid arguments between those in
favour of traditions and those against traditions. Some
believe China's progress toward modernization determines
those against traditions will surely triumph over those
in favour of traditions. Others say this is like throwing
away a valuable treasure only to pick up some trash,
because to give up traditional methods means to give
up the spirit of Chinese culture and pick up what the
Western World has already discarded this century. As
a matter of fact, those artists who support anti-traditional
views are afraid of the profundity of traditions. They
dare not get initiated into the art of traditional painting,
because they know they don't have the ability to make
a success of it. I have great admiration and respect
for experienced artists who have followed the tracks
of ancient painters all their lives because they have
a great spirit that should be eulogized.
Chinese traditional art is colourful and diversified.
It is very rich in content, and a lot can be learned
from it. The spirit of Chinese traditional art is very
free and democratic, for each artist can choose what
he needs from it. As to whether he should accept traditions
or not, it's up to him to decide; no one can impose
anything on him. Whether an artist can make his name
doesn't depend solely on the approval of experts or
the recommendation of some cultural institution, for
such approval or recommendation is only a form of nomination.
People will decide for themselves whether they should
support the artist or not. Even if they are misled,
they will not remain misled for long.
It is great that Professor Li Mingjiu has discovered
a career for himself along the broad road of traditional
art, displaying his great talent. As head of the Art
Department of Hebei Normal University, he has set his
students' feet on the right Path. He is definitely a
great mentor. Years of hard work in the area of artistic
creation have won him the recognition of society. He
is now well-known in and outside China. His artistic
career has entered a phase of purity of the highest
degree. This is why we want to strongly recommend the
productions of Li Mingjiu now. We have never recommended
any immature painters before, because we only want to
recommend the best in the art profession.
An artist must work hard all his life and be honest
with art. To be honest is also the most important thing
in life, because honesty wins trust. Years of being
honest with art have won Professor Li Minjiu support
from his aficionados. We are also honest with our customers
and have won acclaim from society.
