Ding Cong
was born in Shanghai in 1916.Ding started publishing cartoons
on newspapers and magazines in 1930s. During the War of
Resistance against Japan (1937-45), he had toured around
Hong Kong and southwestern China, working as an art editor,
a stage art designer, a teacher and a painter. His cartoons
had been shown in many exhibitions.From 1945 to 1947, Ding
published many cartoons featuring democracy at newspapers
in Shanghai. After the founding of New China in 1949, Ding
worked as an editor for several pictorials. From 1957 to
1978, especially during the ``Culture Revolution'' (1966-76),
Ding had lived in seclusion to avoid political turbulence.
He has emerged to public sight again with his cartoons since
the starting of China's economic reform and opening-up to
the outside world in 1978.
