Born in 1969 in Longnan, Gansu, Zhang graduated from the Chinese Department of Lanzhou University. He started his explorations in modern wash ink painting and modern calligraphy in the early 1990s while working as an art critic. He is now editor-in-chief of the newspaper Chinese Contemporary Calligraphers and Painters, board member of the China Society of Modern Calligraphic Arts, and a member of the Gansu Artists' Association. Since 1992, his works have been exhibited in Thailand and major modern calligraphy exhibitions in China. Zhang has also published more than 30 art reviews and essays.
