Born in 1928 in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, Wang studied western painting at the Shanghai Fine Arts School from 1947 to 1949 and transferred to the Beiping National Art School in 1949. He graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1953. Since then he has been teaching art at the Beijing-based Qinghua University. An art professor of the university, Wang is also a board member of the Chinese Artists' Association and a consultant to the China Society of Modern Calligraphic Arts. In 1985, he co-organized the First Exhibition of Chinese Modern Calligraphy and co-established the China Society of Modern Calligraphy and Painting. A founder of China's Modern Calligraphy Artistic Movement, he has participated in major exhibits of modern calligraphy and other art shows in China and abroad. He has had several solo shows and published numerous books, albums and articles on art.
